120 children go missing every year in Albania, 12 still missing in 30 years

On the International Day for Missing Children, statistics in Albania show a worrying, but also hopeful reality: every year about 120 cases of missing children are reported, but fortunately most of them are found within 72 hours.

However, in the span of 30 years, 12 children are still missing. Names like Bleona Mata and Julian Çela remain alive in the memory of family members who have not stopped searching for decades.

"Albania enters those countries where most of the missing children are found, which is very positive. There are cases where children leave the house on their own, or are kidnapped – even by their parents, after court decisions," declares activist Altin Hazizaj.

To improve the institutional response to the disappearance of children, it is proposed to deploy the Amber Alert system, an emergency signal initially used in the US, which immediately mobilizes police, institutions and the community to search for the missing child. This system was created after the kidnapping and murder of Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl in Texas, in 1996.

Civil society activists gathered today with banners in their hands and a clear message: "Hope is never lost". They asked institutions to show more commitment and create an effective response system for such cases, so that no one is left unanswered.
