US Senate elections, John Cornyn recruits LaCivita in confrontation with Ken Paxton

US Senate elections, John Cornyn recruits LaCivita in confrontation with Ken

John Cornyn has recruited Chris LaCivita, President Trump's top political adviser, to help him face his primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, according to Axios

Why it matters: LaCivita's involvement doesn't guarantee Trump's endorsement in what is expected to be the most expensive Senate primary for the Republican Party (GOP). However, it does show how Cornyn, who has long been seen as more of a traditional politician than a MAGA supporter, is moving closer to the president.

A recent poll commissioned by the Senate Leadership Fund, the Republican leadership’s main super PAC, showed Cornyn at a significant disadvantage to Paxton.
But even before that poll was released, Cornyn was taking steps to bolster his image as a Trump supporter and his pride in a 99% voting record in line with Trump. Meanwhile, Paxton accuses Cornyn of being a fake Trump supporter.

Cornyn has also recruited Tony Fabrizio, another top Trump strategist, to work on his campaign.

The race between Cornyn and Paxton is shaping up to be a repeat of the 2024 primary battle between Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Paxton has hired Axiom, a prominent Republican consulting firm, to lead his campaign.
Meanwhile, Trump insiders have developed a backlash against Axiom and its leader, Jeff Roe, for his work in support of DeSantis.

Trump has harshly criticized Roe in private, while LaCivita and Fabrizio seem to enjoy attacking the strategist publicly.
Roe himself is not directly involved in the race, although some of his associates at the firm are, according to a source familiar with the situation.

LaCivita is also advising former Michigan congressman Mike Rogers, who is running for Senate.
