Gaza war: Over 13,000 children killed and 25,000 wounded

The fierce war in Gaza has caused tragic consequences for children, with over 13,000 killed, some 25,000 wounded and more than 25,000 hospitalized due to malnourishment, according to UN agencies.

James Kariuki, the Deputy U.N. Secretary-General, said: "Gaza has become the deadliest place in the world to be a child." He stressed that gaza's children "did not choose this war, but they have paid the ultimate price."

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, of the 40,717 Palestinian bodies identified so far, one third – 13,319 – are children. UNICEF also estimates that 25,000 children were injured in the conflict, based on data from the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Moreover, the U.N. reports that thousands of children have been orphaned or separated from their parents during the 15-month war.

On the other hand, the conflict has left devastating consequences on education. Yasmine Sherif, executive director of the UN's global education fund, said 650,000 school-age children had not attended the lessons, while gaza's education system must be fully rebuilt.

International diplomats have also raised concerns over Israeli child casualties from the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack in southern Israel, where many were killed, wounded and abducted. Israel's ambassador to the UN Danny Danon has called for the Security Council to examine the plight of Israeli children affected by the conflict.

The conflict in Gaza continues to deepen the humanitarian crisis, leaving grave consequences on the innocent.
