WHO: Awareness of the risk of alcohol and cancer remains low, Europe has the

Although cancer is the leading cause of alcohol-related deaths in the European Union, public awareness of this risk remains extremely low, according to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The study, conducted in 14 countries in the European Region, found that only 15% of respondents were aware that alcohol causes breast cancer, while 39% knew about its link to colorectal cancer. These two types of cancer are among the most common in Europe and have a direct link to alcohol consumption.

Europe, which includes Albania, has the highest levels of alcohol consumption in the world, double the global average. According to the WHO, alcohol causes about 800,000 deaths each year in this region.

Despite the high risk, many European countries, including Albania, have not made sufficient progress in implementing policies to reduce alcohol-related harm. Another concern remains the lack of health warning labels on alcohol products. Currently, only 3 out of 27 EU countries and 13 out of 53 Member States of the European Region implement these measures, leaving consumers unaware of the health risks posed by alcohol.
