Macron reacts after being slapped by his wife: We were joking, as I often do

French President Emmanuel Macron has reacted for the first time to the video that has gone viral online, in which his wife, Brigitte Macron, is seen shooting him in the face shortly before they disembark from the presidential plane on an official visit to Vietnam.

In footage that has been widely circulated, Brigitte Macron is seen punching her husband in the face before he steps off the plane, forcing him to take a step back to regain his balance and then greet the media on the airport tarmac.

Speaking to French television BFMTV, Macron denied that it was a "family scene" and tried to downplay the situation:

"Maybe we were joking, as my wife and I often do, and a video that was published turned into a geoplanetary catastrophe. In the world we live in, we don't have much time to waste discussing such matters," the French president said ironically.

After the incident, Brigitte stood briefly at the entrance of the plane, avoiding direct exposure, before disembarking with her husband. As they descended the stairs, she refused Macron's hand as a conjugal gesture, further fueling speculation of potential tension between the couple.

The French president stressed that this was not the first time that a video featuring him had been misinterpreted:

"In recent weeks, there have been some videos where the images have been distorted. Another case was when I was on the train with Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer to Kiev. People say a lot of stupid things. Everyone needs to calm down," he said, referring to critics as "crazy."
Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron have been married since 2007 and are often in the spotlight for their unusual relationship, but also for the humor and affection they share in public.
