Meat with salmonella still on the market? AKU reacts: Fake news

The National Food Authority (AKU) has reacted to reports in several media outlets and portals claiming that meat contaminated with salmonella was being secretly traded in the country. Through an official statement, the AKU has described these reports as untrue and has provided detailed clarifications on the case.

According to the AKU, it concerns 4,516.75 kg of pork fillets imported from Brazil, which were blocked on January 28, 2025, after contamination with the salmonella spp bacteria was found, based on laboratory tests.

"The quantity of meat remained blocked in the importing entity's warehouses until April 16, when the company officially submitted the request for destruction to the relevant authorities," the AKU announcement states.

The destruction of the quantity of meat, according to the AKU, was carried out in the presence of representatives of the National Inspectorate of Territorial Protection, the Tirana Regional Tax Directorate, and the AKU Tirana Regional Directorate.

The National Food Authority guarantees that contaminated products have not entered the market and assures citizens of its maximum commitment to monitoring food safety and protecting consumer health.
