Putin: Russia will react if the UK sends uranium-enhanced projectiles to Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will be "forced to react" if the United Kingdom sends uranium-enhanced projectiles to Ukraine.

He accused the West of deploying weapons with a "nuclear component", writes the BBC .

Britain confirmed it will send Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine in a bid to bolster the country's capabilities under Russian aggression, but insisted they pose a low radiation risk.

Depleted uranium "is a standard component and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons," the Ministry of Defense said.

"The British military has been using depleted uranium in its armor-piercing shells for decades ," the statement added.

Former British Army tank commander - and chemical weapons expert - Colonel Hamish de Breton-Gordon, said Putin's comments were "classic disinformation".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said sending depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine meant the UK was "ready to violate international humanitarian law as it did in 1999 in Yugoslavia".

"There is no doubt that this will end badly for London, " Mr Lavrov added.

On Tuesday evening, a Pentagon spokesman said the US would not send any depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine.

Depleted uranium shells were used in Iraq and the Balkans, where some claim it was linked to birth defects.
