Spain/ Even Barcelona is hit by floods, more than 80 flights are cancelled

The Spanish city of Barcelona was hit by floods on Monday as search and rescue efforts continue after devastating floods around Valencia last week, the BBC reported .

Spain's state meteorological agency has put parts of Catalonia on red alert for torrential rain, with local media showing footage of cars partially submerged on a highway.

Parts of Barcelona's El Prat airport, the country's second largest, have been flooded. More than 80 flights have been canceled or delayed, while rail services have been suspended.

A similar meteorological event, which hit the Valencia region with a year's worth of rain last week, has caused at least 217 deaths. On Monday, rescue teams focused their efforts on searching for missing people in underground parking lots.

The storm trapped many victims in their vehicles on the road and in underground spaces such as car parks, tunnels and garages, where rescue operations are particularly difficult.

Shoppers and workers are believed to have been trapped inside the car park of a shopping center in Aldaia, on the outskirts of Valencia, as flooding swept through the area.

The police have confirmed that there are no victims in the first 50 vehicles checked at the scene.
