Mass fires in France/ About 6 thousand people are evacuated, villages are

Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in southwestern France after a fire near the city of Bordeaux forced the evacuation of around 6,000 people and destroyed at least sixteen houses.

A major highway was closed Wednesday afternoon because it was close to the fire. Investigators in France are investigating to find the cause of the fires.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that more firefighters have been engaged to contain the fires. In total, more than 1,000 firefighters, nine planes and two helicopters have been mobilized, he said.

Darmanin said that he had "big doubts" that the fire "is the work of arsonists".

The Gironde region was hit last month by huge fires that forced the evacuation of more than 39,000 people, including residents and tourists.

France is this week in the midst of its fourth heat wave of the year as the country grapples with what the government has warned is its worst drought on record.
