Fires in Spain burn 4 thousand hectares of land, hundreds of people leave their

Massive fires in Spain have burned more than 4,000 hectares of land and forced 1,500 villagers to leave their homes in the Valencia region, foreign media reported.

The authorities announced that with the intervention of 500 firemen, it was possible to bring the large fire under control, stopping further progress.

Strong winds were the main factor that helped the flames spread quickly. Studies show that global warming caused last winter to be unusually dry in many regions of southern Europe.

The earlier-than-past fire season raises fears of a repeat of last year's disaster, when twice the average number of acres burned each year burned during the summer.

Last year about 785,000 hectares were destroyed in Europe, more than double the annual average for the last 16 years, according to European Commission (EC) statistics.

In Spain, 493 fires destroyed a record 307,000 hectares of land.
