EU reacts to Veliaj's arrest: We are closely following developments

The European Union has reacted to the arrest of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, stating that it is closely following developments in the investigations against him.

"We are closely following the latest developments regarding the investigation against the Mayor of Tirana. However, the EU does not comment on ongoing judicial proceedings. Justice sector reform and strengthening the rule of law in Albania are key elements in the European Union accession process," the EU's response states.

In its statement, the EU underlines its commitment to supporting Albania in consolidating its institutions and strengthening the independence of the judiciary.

“The EU remains fully committed to supporting Albania's efforts in pursuing these reforms and to helping the country consolidate the efficiency, independence, accountability and professionalism of its institutions, as well as their compliance with EU standards, both in the law enforcement and justice sectors.”

A special emphasis in the statement is placed on the role of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), which according to the EU should operate without any political interference.

“The specific role of SPAK and its independence in investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating complex corruption cases, without any attempt at political interference or undue pressure, are of fundamental importance for the consolidation of the rule of law in Albania,” the EU statement concludes.

Veliaj's arrest has caused numerous reactions in the country, while investigations into his affairs continue.
