DP denounces: Political courts are sentencing opposition activists

In a statement to the media, member of the Democratic Party Presidency, Mariglend Doçi, accused the justice system of using "mafia methods" and stressed that many opposition activists have been convicted on unfounded charges.

Doçi has requested the intervention of international organizations to highlight the government's violations of justice and has warned of a continued fight for justice and democracy in Albania.

Full statement:

In recent days, in a mafia-like manner, many of the activists and civil disobedience protesters of the Democratic Party and the opposition are facing 6-month sentences, converted into 1 year of "probation". This, even though the cases against them were dismissed once in 2020.

We are talking about open trials in 2022, right after the Foltores movement, where opposition activists are put on trial, with false charges, solely to discourage all those who did not allow Edi Rama to name the Albanian opposition.

The new justice system, which has the Prime Minister at its helm, continued these trials and persecutions in silence and under the rug, with 'lawyers mainly', until 2024. At that time, the court came out of its lethargy and, on the eve of the parliamentary elections, made a "final" decision for over 20 activists and supporters of the Democratic Party!

The sentence was kept secret until it was handed down by Judge Ogert Hoxha, a friend of the former mayor, Erion Veliaj. This sentence is being used by the government in the justice system to intimidate Democratic Party activists, with the aim of their non-participation in DP activities, in the electoral campaign, in support of the opposition.

The Democratic Party calls on "directed justice" to immediately stop the repression of activists and not continue as an appendage of Edi Rama's power.

We call on international monitoring organizations to note and react to this brutal intervention in the justice system by Edi Rama, with the aim of attacking his political opponent and distorting the vote.

The Democratic Party does not abandon the supporters of the causes for a homeland with honest justice and for a Great Albania. The fight for the protection of oppositionism and the salvation of Albania began with the Speech and will end with victory on May 11!

For a Great Albania!
