Tabaku from the US: Albanian diaspora strongly supports DP, challenges with

Democratic MP Jorida Tabaku, who has been in the US for several days, has stated that the support of the Albanian diaspora for the Democratic Party is extraordinary. In a link to Eye TV from New York, Tabaku stressed that the main challenge remains to register immigrants for the May 11 elections, due to the lack of biometric identification documents.

"There are many Albanians who left the country before biometric identification came into force, and this has created difficulties to register. We have called continuously for registration, we have held six consecutive meetings and the interest in the opposition is extraordinary," Tabaku said.

She also underlined that the presence of only one Albanian consulate in New York makes it difficult to obtain identification documents for many immigrants. For this reason, the DP has proposed a bill to allow immigrants with identification, but not biometric, documents the right to vote.

According to Tabaku, the DP structure in the diaspora has engaged young people and collaborated with Albanian businesses to help citizens in registration. She called on the Central Election Commission (CEC) to inform the Albanian community more about the registration process and vote on the changes proposed by the opposition.
