Tabaku raises the alarm about strategic lawsuits against journalists: Media

In a conference with representatives of civil society and the media, the deputy of the Democratic Party, Jorida Tabaku, expressed her concern about the deterioration of the media climate in Albania.

Tabaku criticized the use of strategic lawsuits (SLAPP) as a tool to silence free speech and intimidate journalists, calling it a "strategic investment" by the government against media freedom.

In a video posted on social media, she pointed out that self-censorship and threats against journalists are becoming the norm in the country and called for a national debate to protect journalists from legal intimidation.

Deputy Tabaku's post:

You've heard of gossip, you've heard of paid slanderers, you've heard of scum thrown at anyone just because they have a different opinion from the Government. And who makes all this investment? Who says all these words? Of course, those who make strategic lawsuits against journalists today and every day.

This was exactly the discussion we had today with civil society organizations, with media representatives, to open a national discussion on how we can avoid self-censorship, how we can protect journalists to tell the truth, how we can stimulate in the Albania of 2024 , telling the truth should not be taboo, should not be a luxury, but should be a real right that everyone has.

Today I received a commitment from civil society organizations and the media for all these areas and to open a debate and a national discussion even in the name of the integration process, although we must change the reality for Albania and for Albanians, because today the environment of the media has become suffocating and we must fight every day as we fight for everything else, we must also fight for freedom of speech so that no one has the strength and threat of a lawsuit to threaten the media, to close the media and stop them from denouncing every day as they have done until today. I took this commitment clearly as the President of the European Affairs Committee and I will continue to take it to the end, just like every other initiative I have taken.
