Only 115 days in power, how the government of Dritan Abazovic was overthrown

The government of the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abazovic, has been overthrown with 50 votes in favor and one against, after a marathon session in the Assembly that lasted almost 13.

But how long did Abazovic's rule last and how did his government fall?

Only 115 days in power

Dritan Abazovic's government was elected on April 28 of this year with the votes of DPS, URA, SDP, the pro-Serbian Socialist People's Party and the parties of the minority peoples.

Abazovic was the first Prime Minister of Montenegro, who belongs to a national minority community. He took over the leadership of the state after the 2020 elections, when the thirty-year rule of Milo Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists ended.

At that time, Abazovic's URA Civil Movement was the "turning point" for the formation of a new government in Montenegro.

In the previous government of Zdravko Krivokapič, he was the vice-president. After initiating the overthrow of the Krivokapiqi Government in February of this year, Abazovic became the new Prime Minister with the help of Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists at the end of April.

How Dritan Abazovic fell

The initiative to topple the Government, presented by the Democratic Socialist Party of Montenegrin president Milo Djukanovic, came as a sign of dissatisfaction with Abazovic's decision to sign the Basic Agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.

This agreement was assessed as harmful to the national interests of the state.

The initiators have also assessed that the Government had a priority task of reforming the judicial system and strengthening the rule of law, so as to accelerate the process of European integration.

Initially, it was said that there are 36 deputies of the parliamentary majority, led by the Djukanovic Party, which has previously supported the minority of Prime Minister Abazovic, for the overthrow of the Government.

Along with this party, the initiative to overthrow the Government has been supported by the Social Democratic Party, which has two ministerial positions, the Social Democrats, who are in the opposition, the Liberal Party and the Democratic Union of Albanians.

The two initiatives for the overthrow of the Abazovic Government were signed by a total of 68 MPs from the ruling and opposition parties, out of 81 MPs in the Assembly of Montenegro.

It is not known if Montenegro will go to extraordinary elections or if a new government will be formed.
