"1.3 million malnourished children"/ UNICEF: Lack of funds jeopardizes

The United Nations children's agency (UNICEF) warned today that food supplies for children suffering from acute malnutrition in Ethiopia and Nigeria are running out due to a lack of funding. This is due to cuts in international aid by the Trump administration, which have worsened the situation.

An estimated 1.3 million children under the age of five are at risk of losing access to life-saving assistance this year in these two countries. Kitty Van der Heijden, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, said that without new funding, supplies of therapeutic food in Ethiopia will run out by May, leaving 70,000 children without treatment.

In Nigeria, UNICEF warned that supplies for 80,000 malnourished children will run out by the end of this month. Van der Heijden described a tragic case where he met a child in a hospital in Maiduguri who was in a state of severe malnutrition.

Meanwhile, due to cuts in international contributions and a halt in US aid, many UNICEF and other agency programs have been suspended. This has jeopardized the delivery of life-saving food and medical aid and thrown global humanitarian aid efforts into chaos.

Funding cuts have also had a negative impact on health programs, including care for pregnant women and children in Ethiopia, where 23 medical units have suspended operations in the Afras region, with only 7 currently operating.
