April 22, International Earth Day

April 22, International Earth Day

On the United Nations calendar, today is International Earth Day, which, according to experts, is clearly calling for action.

"Nature is suffering, the oceans are filled with plastic and becoming more acidic. Extreme heat, fires and floods have affected millions of people," the UN writes.

On April 22, 1970, in the USA, the first major ecological manifestation was held, from which the idea of declaring this date as International Earth Day emerged. The purpose of this day is to engage all people around the world in protecting the Earth. Also, the purpose of this date remains the protection of planet Earth and all resources from pollution.

Climate change, human-made changes to nature, and crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensification of agriculture and livestock production, or the growing illegal wildlife trade, could accelerate the destruction of the planet.

The UN calls for restoring the balance of damaged ecosystems, which will help end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinctions.

On this day, the UN invites us to remind ourselves, more than ever, that we need a shift towards a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet.

The Importance of Earth Day

Earth Day was first observed in 1970, when 20 million people took to the streets to protest environmental degradation. The event was sparked by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, as well as other problems such as smog and polluted rivers.

For the next half century, Earth Day continued to play an important role in environmental activism.

The historic Paris Agreement, which brings almost 200 countries together in setting a common goal to reduce global greenhouse emissions, was signed on Earth Day 2016.

According to earthday.org, Earth Day aims to “build the world’s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and the planet.” The movement’s mission is to “diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide.”
