Italian ambassador warns of Ndrangheta investigations and ties with Albania:
Italian Ambassador to Tirana, Fabrizio Bucci

The Italian ambassador in Tirana, Fabrizio Bucci has commented on the case of wiretapping and the suspicion that a group of the Italian mafia of "Ndrangheta" has laundered money through connections with Albanian politicians is expected to be investigated in Albania as well.

In an interview with the journalist Ilva Tare in Euroneës Albania, Bucci said that the prosecutors of both countries have been in constant contact that the case will be examined in our country and that not all wiretaps have been published in the media.

Money laundering and corruption were considered by the Italian ambassador as "corrupt tendencies that were known to exist" before the publication of wiretaps about Luigi Mancuso's group "Ndrangheta", a group that is being investigated in Italy by the prosecutor of Catanzaro Nicola Gratteri. Bucci described Gratter as "an important prosecutor", "serious" and "very capable".

The ambassador said that "corruption must be fought regardless of where it comes from and whoever may be involved", implying that at this point there is no difference if politicians are also involved.

Asked if there is cooperation on this issue between the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) in Tirana and the Anti-Mafia Prosecution of Italy, Ambassador Bucci initially recalled that the first international cooperation agreement signed by SPAK, after its creation, was exactly with the Anti-Mafia prosecution on February 7, 2020.

He added that there is a close relationship between national prosecutor Federico Cafiero De Raho and SPAK chairman Arben Kraja. He went on to say that there has been close cooperation and that " soon there will be important developments."

"The investigation in Italy is in the first steps, the first personal security measures have been given, some wiretaps have been published because, in Italy, the Code of Criminal Procedure stipulates that when a prosecutor charges persons, gives personal security measures, he must reveal the facts in on the basis of which these arrests are made. So some eavesdropping has been made public, but not all. Will there be others? "This will belong to the two prosecutors because I think there will be a continuation of the investigation here and that is why the two prosecutors are cooperating ," said the Italian ambassador.
