Fiscal Amnesty, Varhelyi: We need more time. The government should not cross the

The Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement of the European Union, Oliver Varhelyi, has commented on the draft law on fiscal amnesty, which provides that all Albanian citizens and companies operating in the country will have the right to declare their wealth without proving the sources of how they secured it.

In an interview on A2CNN, Varhelyi said that the EU supports the formalization of the economy, but without crossing the red lines.

"What is very clear to us, which we have also discussed with the Prime Minister and his delegation, is that we certainly agree with the goal, which is the transformation of the informal economy into a legal economy, but we must make sure that every action undertaken to comply with the rules we have in the European Union, but also in FATF and Moneyval, which guarantee that if there are such actions, they are done in a legally sound manner.

We are still considering the various options and I hope to find the right technical solutions in order to take a step towards the eradication of the informal economy and reduce it even more.

I think there are healthy ways to do it that we have to find. There are certainly important red lines that must be observed if our rules and norms are to be respected. And we will certainly insist on that, but I think it is possible, we have seen examples in the past, but it has to be done in the right way and we still have to work on it.

These are very complicated issues, even technically, so we need more time, but I hope that, as in every previous case, we will always reach an agreement with the government of Albania, making sure that what is happening in Tirana will comply with our rules and norms.” , said Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi.
