Record asylum applications in Britain in 2022, the highest level in three years

Asylum requests in 2022 have marked a significant increase, reaching the highest post-pandemic level in the European Union, while they are at record levels in the United Kingdom.

According to Eurostat data, since 2020 it reports data for the 27 countries of the European Union (excluding the United Kingdom), in total there were 13.2 thousand applications for asylum in one of the countries of the European Union, the highest level since 2020 -a. Compared to a year ago, asylum applications increased by 16%.

France continues to remain the most preferred for asylum requests by Albanian citizens, with 51% of the total in the EU-27 in 2022. Germany ranks second, with 19% of the total, followed by Italy and Greece with around 10% each . In Belgium, 4.5% of the total asylum requests were reported and in Sweden 1.5%.

In 2022, the United Kingdom was the main asylum destination in Europe for Albanian citizens. In this country alone, according to preliminary official data from the United Kingdom government, about 14,200 asylum applications from Albanian citizens were reported, more than in all other European countries combined. 9,573 of them came from people who arrived by boat.

The majority of applicants from Albania – 83 percent, or 11,832 – were male adults. British media have reported that this is a significant increase compared to previous years, when around 800 Albanians arrived in Great Britain in small boats in 2021 and 50 the year before.

Albanians were the largest nationality that applied for asylum in Great Britain in 2022.

Historical data from Eurostat (up to 2019) and the United Kingdom (from 2020) show that up to 2021 UK emigration rates were relatively low, between 3-4 thousand people per year.

While in 2022, the increase has been significant, becoming a concern for the British authorities and prompting the British media to write many articles about the reasons that are driving this mass immigration, endangering life by sea.

In total, in the European Union-27 and in the United Kingdom, about 27 thousand people applied for asylum in 2022, which is the highest level since 2016.

The record of applications continues to be 2015, with about 69 thousand citizens who requested asylum in one of the countries of the European Union and the United Kingdom. While 2022 is the third highest year, after the high flow of 2015-2016./ Monitor
