"Pressure" of the EU, Borrell: The government will withdraw from the "golden passports"
The High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, made it clear from the joint conference with Rama and Oliver Varhelyi, that "golden passports" will not be approved.
After the meeting of the Association Stabilization Council, Borrell said that Albania should continue with the referrals, asserting that he has reached an agreement with Prime Minister Rama that the "golden passports" will not be approved.
"It is my third visit to Albania as a representative of the EU, but today is a historic moment for our relations. Today we are here to show the Albanian people that the EU is closer to you as a candidate country for the EU. They use the Stabilization Association Council for relations between the EU and Albania. We examine what has been done, where efforts are needed and what we can do. We see and welcome the clear strategic direction of Albania in the EU. We are working for Albania's membership in all areas. I want to accept and appreciate that this country has shown maturity in all reforms, especially in justice which has moved forward. Albanian institutions must speed up reforms. We were able to welcome the Prime Minister's decision that golden passports will not be approved ," said Borrell.
The government has repeatedly stated, despite international criticism, that it will not withdraw from the "golden passports".
