Eurocontrol reduces airport fees for Tirana and Kukës for 2025 as well

Tariffs at Tirana International Airport and Kukes Airport have been revised downwards for the third consecutive year. Eurocontrol, the organization that manages European air traffic and bills and collects tariffs (on behalf of Albcontrol), decided that for 2025 the tariff for Tirana Airport will be reduced by about 2 percent, going to the level of 214.01 euros/aircraft from 218.33 euros for 2024.

For Kukës Airport, categorized as a zone 2 airport, the fee approved by Eurocontrol for this year is 107 euros, down from 109.16 euros in 2024. The interest paid for obligations not repaid on time for 2025 is set at 13.79 percent per year, while for 2024 it was 13.26 per year.

Albania officially has two functional airports but currently only operates flights from Tirana International Airport, which recorded a record number of passengers traveling through it in 2024. The introduction of a series of low-cost airlines has boosted entry and exit from the country through this airport, as it is the main gateway from where tourists have been arriving in recent years.

In early December, TIA announced that the number of passengers served so far had exceeded 10 million, while the final balance for the year should be even higher. By the end of November, Albania had welcomed 11.1 million tourists, while it is expected that by the end of 2024 there will be a balance of around 12 million foreign arrivals.

What is the terminal fee?

In an extended explanation by Eurocontrol, terminal charges are invoices sent by Eurocontrol each month (in the middle of the following month) for flights that took place in the previous month along with the itinerary fee invoice.

The billing documents clearly indicate the country for which this money is collected. The payment terms for the terminal fees portion are the same as those for the itinerary applied by Eurocontrol, which means 30 days from the date of billing.

Regarding how these charges are calculated, Eurocontrol explains that member states define charging zones for terminals, which can be an aerodrome or several aerodromes located in a specific location where services are provided for which a charge must be paid. Terminal charges are set only for departing flights and take into account two essential elements.

First, the weight of the departing aircraft and second, the unit of charge for the aerodrome from which the departure takes place. The result obtained after multiplying the two elements is the value paid for the terminal. The weight factor is calculated in metric tons./ Monitor
