Kosovo bans import of sheep and goats from Albania

The Food and Veterinary Agency has announced a ban on the import of sheep and goats from the entire territory of Albania, following the confirmation of numerous cases of rinderpest disease.

The Food and Veterinary Agency has announced that it has changed the temporary ban on the import of small ruminants, sheep and goats. The FVA emphasizes that from today the ban applies to the entire territory of Albania.


"After reassessing the situation, notifications of confirmed cases of PPR disease (Peste des Petits Ruminants) in other regions, the AUVA lifts the restrictive measure for the entire territory of Albania, in order to prevent its spread. Looking at the course of the situation, in addition to the restrictive measure on imports.

"The municipalities of Kosovo in the border zone with Albania, through their Directorates of Agriculture, should impose strict restrictive measures on the movement of small livestock in the pastures of the border zone. Farmers keeping sheep and goats should keep their livestock under supervision and prevent any contact of their herds with the herds of farmers from the neighboring country," the AUVA statement said.

The AUV adds that PPR is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects sheep and goats. It is spread through direct contact with sick animals, while the source of infection is secretions and feces.

"Clinical signs include: high fever, runny nose, eye inflammation, decreased appetite, diarrhea and in severe cases, death. This disease is not zoonotic, so it is not transmitted to humans and does not pose a risk to public health," adds the AUV.

Border authorities will strengthen controls at all border points and areas of the border strip with Albania, in order to prevent the introduction of the disease into the territory of the Republic of Kosovo.

"The AUVA, in cooperation with the relevant authorities, will closely monitor the situation and will take all necessary preventive measures. It will also regularly inform farmers and the public about further developments. At this stage, sheep and goat farmers should prevent any contact of their livestock with farms from Albania in the pastures of the border belt."/ Monitor
