The Prosecutor's Office of Tirana dismisses the case for the death of Lear

The Prosecutor's Office of Tirana has decided to close the case for the death of 32-year-old Lear Kurti. According to the investigation, it turned out that the death was caused by an overdose of narcotics.

The prosecution has come to the conclusion that the police officers who escorted him to the police station did not commit a violation.

The request of the prosecution together with the results of the investigation has been submitted to the court.

Part of the expert report:

"In response to the act of medical-legal expertise, the Anatomical-Pathological diagnosis is determined: Acute Overdose (Helimim) with narcotics of the cocaine type. We were acute hypoxia of the myocardium accompanied by contraction and deformation of myofibrils, pronounced edema of the brain, vasal stasis and capillary extravasation, atelectasis and compensatory emphysema of the lungs, persistent chronic hepatitis. The cause of death of the citizen Lear Kurti was acute poisoning (overdose) with cocaine-type narcotics, complicated by toxic shock, with the mechanism of acute myocardial ischemia that resulted in cardiac asystole (immediate cardiac arrest).

The 32-year-old died by being rolled in the hands of the officers of the police station no. 3 of the Tirana Police. He was arrested on the evening of October 19, 2023 by the officers and died within 30 minutes. However, the non-clearance of this event is a consequence of the contradictory claims of the parties. The preliminary examination came to the conclusion that there was no violence against the young man, but that he died as a result of the explosion of the cocaine he swallowed, while the family members claim that he was raped by the police. A testimony of the young man's friend at 'Piranjat' strongly suspected that the Police and AMP covered up the incident. The young man stated that he had seen the victim being brutally beaten while accusing the director of AMP, Ardi Veliu, of indirectly "advising" him not to accept the violence he had seen with his own eyes
