While firefighters in the south of Kosovo prayed for rain in their battle against fires in the Sharr Mountains National Park, a young man on a motorcycle approached them and said: "I have come to help", writes Reuters .

Allmedin Smaili, 26, a dentist from the nearby town of Prizren, has been helping firefighters put out a fire in the park for seven days where he and his friends usually go on their motorbikes to enjoy the thrill of riding on rough terrain.

Two men at the fire base fill 25-gallon backpacks with water each, and Smaili carries them to other firefighters to use to put out the flames as large areas of pine burn.

Most of the time he carries two backpacks with a total of 50 liters of water, snacks and bottles of drinking water.

"When I saw what the firefighters were going through and how dedicated they are, I told myself that I have to do something ," said Samili as he prepared to transport more water.

On Wednesday, Smaili called three other comrades to carry more water after the balloon stopped the flames and an American helicopter from the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo began dropping water. The challenge is to stop the slow burning of trees that can be re-ignited with a more destructive fire.

"To reach the highest point with water on our backs, we need three hours and the boy (Smaili) was doing it in less than ten minutes," said Flamur Hoti, the fire brigade commander.

"We never imagined he could be so useful."

Video from his GoPro camera shows Smail delivering water to his young colleagues as his motorcycle sped along trails blazed by brown bears and wild goats.

From its left and right side you can see the steep slopes through traces of old burnt areas which are still visible.

Firefighters cannot reach the terrain about 1,900 meters above sea level.

"Motorcross is a hobby for me, but this week it turned into a real job," he said with a smile. "When I see the result, I feel satisfaction and I have never been tired during these days" , he says.
