Study: Pregnant women 70% at risk of Covid-19 infection

A new study has found that pregnant women are more at risk for Covid-19 infection. The study, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology , found that the risk of contracting coronavirus is 70 percent higher among pregnant women than in adults of similar age in Washington, DC.

Researcher Kristina Adams Waldorf of the University of Washington in the United States said in a statement: " Our data show that pregnant women did not avoid the pandemic as we hoped they would."

For the study, the research team included 35 hospitals and clinics. The group identified 240 pregnant women who won the battle with Covid-19 from March to June 2020.

Lead researcher Waldorf also asked pregnant women to discuss the risks and benefits of Covid-19 vaccination with their prenatal doctor.

"We want to use information from this study to be better prepared for the next pandemic and not to leave pregnant women aside. "They need to have a place at the table when it comes to vaccine trials and vaccination scheduling,  " she said.

Emily H. Adhikari, MD, University of Southwest Texas Medical Center in Dallas, also said in an interview that pregnant women infected with Covid-19 are at risk for premature birth and miscarriage.

"Pregnant women may also be at higher risk for serious illness and death from Covid-19 than non-pregnant women of similar age, " she added.
