VOA: Kurti summoned to testify at Kosovo's Special Prosecution Office in abuse of office case

VOA: Kurti summoned to testify at Kosovo's Special Prosecution Office in

The Kosovo government spokesman said on Wednesday that the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office has sent a summons to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti to appear on December 16, but without providing any details about the summons.

In a post on Facebook, spokesperson Përparim Kryeziu wrote that "While Prime Minister Kurti is in a meeting of the Vetëvendosje Movement Presidency to finalize the list of candidates for MPs from the LVV, Guxo and Alternativa coalition in the 2025 elections, the Prime Minister's Office informed me that an invitation has arrived for him from the Special Prosecution Office."

The summons he shared on Facebook states that the prime minister has been summoned to testify in a case related to the criminal offense provided for in Article 414 of the Criminal Code of Kosovo. This article sanctions offenses related to "abuse of official position or authority."

Spokesperson Kryeziu did not provide any details, but criticized the justice system for interfering in the electoral process.

"In the past elections, there was a court decision that prevented (Mr. Kurti) from running in the February 14, 2021 election, and now, through this invitation, an attempt is being made to influence the outcome of the 2025 elections," he wrote.

The summons letter states that it concerns the case number PPSnr. 62/2023. Experts in the justice system told Voice of America that this case has to do with a process regarding "state reserves", in connection with which three people were arrested in August 2023, two of whom were employees of the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade.

Flour, medicines, oil, sugar, hygiene products, oil, etc. are part of state reserves that can be used in the event of a state of emergency being declared as a result of natural disasters, wars, or in cases where these items are missing from the market.

Prime Minister Kurti denied at the time the suspicions of misuse of state reserves while accusing, as he said, "the old and corrupt political elite, its judges and prosecutors, and the media misused for supporting crime", of trying to restore "the former rotten and corrupt system". VOA
