Kosovo elections, Reuters: Vetevendost on the road to victory, but needs
Kosovo's ruling Vetevendosje (VV) party is on track to come first in Sunday's parliamentary elections, but will not have the absolute majority to form a government, according to an exit poll.

Reuters reports that the election result is expected to be a significant drop from the 50% that VV received in 2021, but Prime Minister Albin Kurti's party remains in position to lead the next government.

During the campaign, Kurti ruled out forming a coalition, stating that he would not participate in the government unless he won over 50% of the vote.

According to the exit poll of TV Klan Kosova, Vetevendosje is expected to win 38.2% of the vote, while the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) comes second with 22.4%, followed by the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) with 20.1%. Two other exit polls, from Dukagjini TV and T7 TV, also rank VV first with 40.3% and 37% of the vote respectively.

Kosovo, Europe's
youngest state, declared independence from Serbia in 2008, with the support of the United States after a 78-day NATO bombing campaign against Serbian forces in 1999.

Political analysts say Kurti's popularity has increased after efforts to expand government control in northern Kosovo, where an ethnic Serb majority lives. But critics accuse him of a lack of progress in education and health, as well as of cooling relations with the European Union and the United States.

In 2023, the EU imposed economic sanctions on Kosovo, cutting at least 150 million euros in financing due to tensions with ethnic Serbs. In this context, LDK has campaigned for improved relations with the West and Kosovo's NATO membership.
