Dom Gjergj Meta: The message of Pope Francis' visit to Iraq

Shalom! Shalom! Shalom! Three times he repeated in Aramaic the word "peace" Pope Francis in Karakos, in the face of images of destruction and ruins, thus giving the message of peace and reconciliation for the future.

Terrorism cannot have the last word. Peace, brotherhood, and friendship between people of different faiths and ethnicities are possible.

Pope Francis traveled to Iraq challenging Covid and terrorism. Yes! It was a journey to Peace, quite similar to that of another Francis, that of Assisi, 800 years ago, who in the turmoil and bloodshed of the Crusades faced danger and met Sultan Malik-Al-Kamil.

The messages that were given, the symbols that were performed have excited many people, all those who have in mind a human society where belief in God, different ethnic or racial affiliations, political beliefs, do not make people enemies, but dialogues for the good of all.

Even in 2014, when Pope Francis visited Albania, he spoke of brotherhood among Albanians who, although with different beliefs, know how to find and have always found the way to coexistence. Unfortunately, in Albania, this is not happening with those who have different political visions and beliefs. The latter has created fierce and often unregulated conflicts, as if we were dealing with a jungle and, consequently, with the need for survival.

But let's get back to Pope Francis in Iraq. He once again showed coherence with what he has preached since the beginning of his pontificate, even becoming an example for all of us and for anyone who has a public commitment.

He visited Mosul, Ur (Abraham's place), Karakoshi martyred by Daesh terrorists. His messages were both spiritual and political. He encouraged Christians not to leave the country, to rebuild their ancient traditions, to preserve them, and to contribute to the good of the country. And a first political result was precisely the acceptance of genocide by the Iraqi parliament against minorities, women and children, Yazidis, Christians, and Kurds.

Of course, the road to peace is long, arduous. It is a process that often has its ups and downs and meets the targets of human nature, the small and big interests of individuals and the oil industry, as well as the hatred that the wounds have caused. But these things do not make peace impossible.

Thank you Pope Francis for this journey of hope and peace. Have a nice return to Rome!
