Albania and the Arrested Justice: Time for Change

By Lisander Hoxha

Albania is at a critical crossroads, where US aid for judicial reform has been used not to punish real corruption, but to crack down on the opposition and protect corrupt government officials. US taxpayer money, which was supposed to help build an independent judiciary, has been squandered by individuals linked to Soros, who have hijacked the mechanisms of justice for political gain.

The case of Sali Berisha is clear evidence of this deformation. A year of detention without evidence, without concrete charges and in clear violation of the European Convention on Human Rights is a dangerous precedent, showing how justice has become a tool of political persecution. Opposition politicians such as Ervin Salianji and Fatmir Mediu have also suffered the same fate, while corrupt government officials continue to remain untouched.

The Albanian people deserve real justice, not a captive system that protects the powerful and punishes political opponents. Hope comes from the US commitment to supporting a justice system that works, serving the citizens and not those in power.

Only through an independent and politically uninfluenced judiciary can Albania emerge from the captivity of transition and build a strong democracy, where crime and corruption are punished without distinction.

The time is now! Justice should not be a tool in the hands of a minority, but hope for all the Albanian people!
