Ke Huy Quan breaks down in tears as he wins Oscars for best supporting actor: Mom I won, this is the American dream

Ke Huy Quan breaks down in tears as he wins Oscars for best supporting actor:

Ke Huy Quan, an actor who rose to stardom as a child and returned to the limelight after decades in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," won the Oscar for best supporting actor.

Quan took the stage and made a very emotional dedication to his 84-year-old mother, who was watching from home: "Mom, I just won an Oscar!"

For Quan, the win marks a particularly emotional coda to the awards season. He rose to fame before his teenage years, playing Harrison Ford's sidekick in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and appearing in 1985's The Goonies. But Quan gave up acting. a little later, because he found that there weren't many important film roles for Asian people. He didn't return to acting until 2021's Everything Everywhere as Waymond Wang, the stupid husband of Michelle Yeoh's laundromat owner.

"My journey started with a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp. And somehow, I ended up here on the biggest stage in Hollywood," he said through tears. "They say that such stories only happen in movies. I can't believe this is happening to me. This is the American dream!”

The actor has had an incredible run lately, winning statues at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice and SAG Awards, in addition to his first Oscar, which he picked up last night. It's a poignant coincidence that he was able to cross the awards circuit with Steven Spielberg, who worked with Quan on "Indiana Jones" and is nominated for directing the semi-autobiographical drama "The Fabelmans."

"Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine," he said through tears. "To all of you out there, please keep your dream alive."

At that moment, he realized that his career could rise or fall after the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once. So, he called a producer to ask, “Can you tell me one thing please? Am I good at movies? Nobody wants to hire me.”

He recalled, “[The producer said], 'Ke, just be patient. Just wait.”
