Oscars 2023, surprises and snubs: From impressive Elvis nominations to Angela Bassett's loss

This year's Academy Awards made history with historic wins for Asian actors Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, along with costume designer Ruth E. Carter becoming the first black woman to win two Oscars and best song well original "Naatu Naatu", the first win in the category for an Indian film. As expected, All Quiet on the Western Front dominated with five wins, with All Quiet on the Western Front right behind with four.

Meanwhile, Best Picture nominees including "Elvis," "The Fabelmans," "Banshees of Inisherin" and "Tar" went home empty-handed despite 30 nominations between them. Below, Variety breaks down the biggest snubs and surprises of the 95th Annual Academy Awards.

UNCONTINUED: Angela Bassett, Best Supporting Actress, "Wakanda Forever"

Throughout the season, the supporting actress category has been a bit of a question mark. While Bassett looked like the early front-runner with wins at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards, neither of those voting bodies overlap with the Oscars. So when Kerry Condon won the BAFTA and Jamie Lee Curtis took home the SAG award, the category started to look pretty wide open. And no one could deny Bassett's powerful performance in a movie everyone saw — or how influential her speeches have been. Still, Bassett earned praise, receiving a sweet salute from award presenters Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors. "Hey, aunty," Jordan - who played her nephew in the first Black Panther movie - said as Majors added: "We love you."

Users on Twitter say that this greeting of the two actors was a pin for the "Academy" and appreciation for the actress who seems that she was also upset that she did not receive this award.

DISCONTINUED: Catherine Martin and "Elvis"

Most pundits predicted this category would come down to two previous winners - Justin Hurwitz for his acclaimed score "Babylon" and five-time Oscar winner/legend John Williams. But it was German composer Bertelmann, previously nominated in this category for "Lion," who received his first Oscar.
