In the face of ever-increasing Western pressure, Chinese tech giant TikTok has updated its content guidelines. The United States and allies are concerned that TikTok could be used to spread false information. This application known for its short video format is owned by the Chinese company, ByteDance. Many suspect data sharing with official Beijing.

Julie de Bailliencourt, TikTok's head of product policy, stated:

"The principles are based on our commitment to respect human rights, in line with international legal guidance. TikTok aims to be fair, protect human dignity and balance freedom of expression while preventing harm."

This Chinese application is being widely criticized in the United States of America, as well as in Europe and Asia-Pacific. This is after many governments have banned the use of TikTok on government equipment, due to potential cyber and disinformation risks. So far there is no evidence that anything similar has happened on TikTok, nor has the app shared data with the Chinese government, as some critics believe it might.

Tomorrow, the head of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, is expected to appear before the US Congress where he will be questioned about TikTok's practices and ties to the Chinese government.
