Shakira talks about the difficult separation from Pique

Shakira has openly confessed how difficult life has been after her separation from Gerard Pique.

“I've had a very difficult year after my breakup and writing this song ['Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53'] has been so important to me," she confessed on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." "It's been a healthy way to channel my emotions."

Shakira said that after releasing the song, she felt how other women could relate to her situation with her ex.

"I really felt that I don't have fans, but sisters who have been through the same things I've been through, who think the way I think, who feel the way I feel, who have had to put up with as much crap as I've put up with . And I wrote the song for me, but I also feel like it was meant for so many women out there who needed a forum and a voice to represent them in so many ways."

Last June, Shakira and Pique announced their separation in a joint statement.

"We regret to confirm that we are parting ways," the statement read. "For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding."

Shakira allegedly discovered Piqué's infidelity from her jam that was wasted while she was away. Neither Gerard nor her sons ate jam. Piqué has since made his relationship official with his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti. Shakira and Piqué met in 2010 on the set of her song "Waka Waka". A year later, they confirmed their romance, sharing a photo of themselves together on Instagram. The former couple has sons, Milan, 10 years old, and Sasha, 8 years old.
