The three plants that soothe the intestines and aid digestion
Discover three aromatic and healing plants that are used in cooking, but also consumed as teas, contributing to the proper functioning of digestion and combating any discomfort.
Why go all the way to the pharmacy to solve the intestinal problem when we can turn to "nature's pharmacy"?
Nature has gifted us with a multitude of healing plants that in ancient times were recommended for good health and well-being, solving a number of disorders of the digestive system. These medicinal herbs, some of which are used traditionally, contribute to the proper functioning of the intestines.
Going back to the present day, quite a few nutritionists recommend herbs, especially dried flowers, for indigestion and other gastrointestinal disorders. Discover three of them below.
dill
Dill is a plant that you can find in a corner of the garden or you can put it in a pot on your balcony. All parts of the plant have a distinctive aroma, from the roots to the seeds and leaves, can be eaten or used in cooking and in salads as a spice.
"Fennel seeds improve digestion and help with intestinal disorders," says nutritionist Ginger Hultin. This is because fennel has the ability to relax the muscles of the digestive system. Also, they are rich in fiber, which means they help the digestive system in general. In addition, some research claims that this particular herb has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties.
It is therefore no coincidence that Hippocrates suggested it as a sedative for stomachaches and colic in babies.
Dandelions
Dandelion is an extremely nutritious plant, full of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Its active ingredients have, among other things, diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, while also contributing to the proper functioning of the liver.
According to research evidence, taking the plant can increase two valuable types of probiotics associated with gut health, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Its leaves can be eaten cooked or raw in a salad. The root is usually dried and can be consumed as a drink.
camomile
Perhaps one of the most popular grandmother's remedies for minor pains and irritations such as ears or eyes. The healing and soothing properties of chamomile are indisputable as it is one of the most famous natural sedatives.
At the same time, it is also an excellent plant that promotes the health of our digestive system. Some studies report that it can positively contribute to various gastrointestinal disorders such as bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, anorexia and vomiting. In addition to drinking chamomile, you can try its dried flowers in a smoothie.
