Karen Pierce appointed UK envoy for the Western Balkans

The United Kingdom has appointed Karen Pierce as special envoy for the Western Balkans, the British Embassy in Kosovo announced on Friday.

Pierce, who is among Britain's most experienced diplomats, will be tasked with advancing Britain's strategic goals in the Balkan countries of Kosovo, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the announcement said.

This includes holding a Berlin Process summit with the leaders of these countries in the fall of 2025, according to the Embassy. The Berlin Process was launched in 2014, at the initiative of then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The aim of its summits, which are held annually, is to increase cooperation between the Western Balkan countries and gradually bring them closer to the EU. Within the framework of the Berlin Process, several agreements and declarations have been made over the years, but many of them have remained unimplemented.

"The UK is committed to strengthening the partnership in the Western Balkans, strengthening European security and combating our shared problem of irregular immigration," the British Embassy said on Facebook.

Pierce is taking up this post after five years as Britain's ambassador to the United States.

She was previously the British ambassador to the United Nations. From 2002 to 2006, she served as coordinator for the Balkans./REL
