From Tirana to the world, REL: Why do citizens of Montenegro choose "Mother Teresa" airport?
"Podgorica - Tirana - Catania - 7 days, 390 euros".
"Podgorica - Tirana - Sicily - by plane - May 21 - 479 euros".
Almost in all the advertisements of tourist agencies in Podgorica, Tirana is unavoidable.
It is not, simply, an intermediate station from Podgorica to Sicily, but an airport from which the citizens of Montenegro go more and more to the world.
Pjervitorio Farabi, operational director of the "Mother Teresa" airport in Tirana, tells Radio Free Europe that, last year, about 53 thousand passengers from Montenegro flew from this airport, while until April of this year about 20 thousand.
He says that this airport had the largest turnover in the region in the first quarter of this year. Nearly 1.6 million passengers traveled through it until April this year alone - which is a record among neighboring countries.
"Mother Teresa" airport is about 140 kilometers from Podgorica and between these two destinations it takes about three hours of driving.
Travelers from Montenegro
Montenegro has two airports - in Podgorica and in Tivat. However, the insufficient number of flights, poor choice of destinations and expensive tickets are the reasons why citizens say they choose the airport of the neighboring country.
One of them, Nikola, has just returned from Sicily, which he says he visited for the first time:
"A round-trip ticket Tirana-Catania costs less than 20 euros... There are some small concessions, but nothing terrible. You will arrive where you thought".
"From Podgorica and Tivat you can only fly to certain destinations, while from Tirana you can choose where you want," he says.
Bojani from Podgorica usually flies four times a year, always from Tirana.
"The reasons are simple. Cheap flights and a large selection of destinations. Even with the transport costs, even with leaving the car in the parking lot next to the airport, it is significantly cheaper. The choice of destinations from Montenegro is so small that it is not attractive at all," he says.
How is the situation at the airports in Montenegro?
For a year and a half, low-cost airlines Ryanair and Wizzair have been flying from Podgorica to several European destinations.
But when the airport in Podgorica increased the taxi price in 2022, they canceled flights to Barcelona, Bologna, Zagreb, Manchester, Vienna, Rome...
At the time, the Government of Montenegro said that such cancellation of flights is "ordinary business of these companies in the region and beyond".
Starting in May, some lines have returned. However, until May 17, there were only about thirty incoming flights and the same number of outgoing flights from Podgorica and Tivat airports.
“Unë shkoj gjithmonë me makinën time.
He adds that the agency adapts to existing flights to and from Montenegro.
"The poor offer of flights limits our work. Despite this, we do the best we can with the two airports we have", says Durović.
Although for some the number of flights is insufficient, the airport in Podgorica has had about 370 thousand passengers so far this year, which means 45 percent more compared to the same period of 2019. REL
