A delegation of Bundestag’s Albanian-German co-operation group, composed of Chair of the SPD Bundestag Faction Josip Juratovic, Chair of FDP Bundestag Faction Renata Alt, Deputy, and Alternative for Germany’s Hansjörg Müller, visited Albania over the last days.
In a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon, they said to have met with Parliament officials, Parliamentary Committees, Prime Minister Edi Rama, and the Ministers of Justice and Interior, in order to get a clear picture of the reforms implemented so far by the country and of its readiness to launch membership talks with the European Union (EU).
They said that the current political situation would certainly affect the EU member states’ decision on this issue. They added that the Parliament was the highest body in a democratic society and that political debate should take place in it. While everybody is free to protest, the boycott of Parliament is the boycott of democracy, they stated. According to them, the local elections should be held in line with the deadlines set forth by the Albanian Constitution.
