Alfred Moisiu: The president to be elected by the people, politics has damaged

Former President Alfred Moisiu suggests to the current head of state Ilir Meta to leave the post if the Constitutional Court decides on his dismissal.

"Parliament has its rights, it has its arguments, which it has foreseen, it is certainly the first time it happens but we will see what the Constitutional Court will decide. "I think that just as he takes office from the Assembly, you should also hand it over when it comes to surrendering" , said Moisiu for "Report tv"

Alfred Moisiu is convinced that being president in Albania is not an easy task, but he must be guided by the mission to be a representative of unity.

"The president is the one who must unite the nation, he is the one who represents the unity of the nation and whoever takes on this task must implement it. When elected by parties, personalities whether they like it or not will defend the wing from which they come. It is not so easy, I have been in this task myself, despite the fact that I was elected by consensus and I tried to maintain this consensus in relations with the parties. Because there are problems that politics should be all together and there can be no different views on problems of the future of the nation, of the fate of Albanians. But unfortunately in our country the politicians keep the party spirit. This is a very big problem " , said Moisiu.

Moisiu sees the connections with politics as a damage to the role of the president, so he thinks that he should be elected by the people.

"Albanian politics in 30 years has had its ups and downs and of course the practice has shown that the election of the president as we do is not very fair, the president must be elected by the people. Of course, whoever the people will elect can be a politician, but the responsibility is higher to represent the people and to implement what is required by the Constitution ", said Moisiu.

The Assembly dismissed President Ilir Meta on June 9 with 104, becoming the first president dismissed by parliament in the history of the Republic of Albania. Now Meta's fate is expected to be decided by the Constitutional Court, which will rule on whether there has been a serious violation of the Constitution.
