Vucic Rejects US Proposal for Continuation of Negotiations with Kosovo, Accepts Talks on Restoring Belgrade-Pristina Rail Line

Vucic Rejects US Proposal for Continuation of Negotiations with Kosovo, Accepts

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic dismissed the US position that Kosovo should abolish tariffs on Serbian goods and that at the same time Serbia should suspend the campaign for retracting the recognition of Kosovo, but he supported the idea to reestablish railway traffic between Belgrade and Pristina.

“I don’t accept for equivalence to be drawn between the tax and retracting recognition. We have a different view on the issue of the independence of Kosovo than America and Pristina. They want to impose the independence of Kosovo, and we don’t want to. It is completely logical for us to have different views,” said Vucic on Friday, after meeting with Richard Grenell the special envoy of the US President for peace negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina.

Vucic said that the taxes were imposed without any reason and that in this case, it cannot be “quid pro quo.”

He said that Serbia has lost 435 million euros per year, i.e. around 1.3 million per day and that it is food companies that are suffering the most, but also Chinese-owned HBIS Smederevo steel mill.

Vucic said that “finding a compromise solution is indisputable,” and that is the reason why he is talking to Grenell.

He also spoke to Grenell about building a road to Pristina and establishing rail traffic between Belgrade and Pristina, and at the press conference, he said that this is precisely why it is important that the taxes be withdrawn because it is senseless to have passenger trains without cargo.

Grenell repeated the position that he had presented in Pristina on Thursday, after the meeting with Kosovo officials: that the taxes are unacceptable and must be revoked, but that Belgrade’s campaign for retracting recognition must be stopped.

He said in Belgrade that he has no agenda nor plan, but that he is there to push both sides, to encourage them to get what they want, and he emphasized the economy and creating opportunities for young people so that they would not go abroad.

Grenell added that a meeting of experts teams from both sides will be held on Monday in Berlin, to discuss the idea of establishing a railway line between Belgrade and Pristina.

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci on Friday welcomed the proposal for reestablishing railway traffic between Belgrade and Pristina, stating that it would be a great step towards full normalization of relations.
