Sadly in Gaza, Israeli bombing kills twins who were only four days old

The newborn twins were killed on Tuesday by an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip while their father was at the communal center to register them. Asser, a boy, and Ayssel, a girl, were just four days old when their father, Mohammed Abu al-Qumsan, went to get their birth certificates. While he was away, neighbors called to tell him that his house in Deir al Balah had been bombed. His wife and the twins' grandmother were also killed in the attack.

"I don't know what happened. They told me it was a shell that hit the house," he said.

"I didn't even have time to enjoy their birth", he added.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza has said that 115 newborn babies have been killed in this country since the war began. The Israeli military says it tries to avoid harming Palestinian civilians and blames their deaths on Hamas - the US and EU-designated terrorist group - saying its militants operate in residential areas, sometimes sheltering among civilians and carrying out attacks from homes, schools, mosques and other civilian buildings. However, the military rarely comments on individual attacks, which often kill children and women.

Israel says its aim is to destroy Hamas, after the October 7 attack, in which militants from Gaza swept into southern Israel and killed 1,200 people and kidnapped around 250 others. After a round of exchanges in November, Israel says a further 111 hostages are being held in Gaza, including the dead bodies of 39 hostages.

Israel's war in Gaza has since left nearly 40,000 Palestinians dead and more than 91,700 wounded, according to health officials in the enclave. More than 1.9 million of pre-war Gaza's total population of 2.3 million have been forced to flee their homes, constantly moving across the tiny territory to escape the war./REL
