Mar Galcerán makes history as Spain's first female MP with Down

For decades she fought to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities were part of the conversation. However, the extent of the progress she had made was recently revealed when Mar Galcerán became Spain's first parliamentarian with Down syndrome.

"It's unprecedented ," the 45-year-old told the Guardian . "Society is beginning to see that people with Down syndrome have a lot to contribute. But it's a very long way."

When Galcerán was 18, she joined the Popular Conservative Party (PP) after retreating from what she described as its embrace of tradition.

Slowly she moved up to the center of the party. Her commitment paid off last May, when she was added as the 20th name to the list of candidates the PP was fielding in the Valencian regional elections.
