NATO activates for the first time in history the Response Force, 40 thousand

For the first time in history, the NATO Response Force has been activated as a safeguard measure in response to Russia's continued occupation of Ukraine.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said from Brussels that NATO had activated a potential force of 40,000 troops for a "preventive and defensive" role.

The decision follows a meeting of NATO ministers Friday morning in Brussels.

"We are deploying the NATO response force for the first time in a collective defense context. We are talking about thousands of troops. We are talking about air and naval capabilities," he told reporters.

"Some allies have already assigned troops and forces to the NATO response force," he added.

"We have the force of high readiness, the force of NATO response, and that is why we are deploying it. To prevent any misunderstanding we are not prepared to defend all allies," Stoltenberg said.

He adds that Europe is also focusing on strengthening its cyber defense.
