The electronic communications market returned to growth in 2024, reaching 400

The electronic communications market returned to growth last year, driven mainly by increased revenues from mobile services. According to data reported to the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP) by market operators, total revenues reached 39.3 billion lek (around 400 million euros), up 4% compared to the previous year.

The market growth came all in the mobile services segment. The two mobile network operators, Vodafone Albania and One Albania, last year reported revenues from electronic communications worth 27.93 billion lekë, an increase of 8.9% compared to the previous year.

The mobile services market continues to provide the largest volume of market revenues, with 71% of the total market turnover, further increasing from the level of 69% a year ago. In the market division according to the turnover generated by the mobile segment, Vodafone Albania has deepened its dominance, with around 58% of the total market, from 56% it held a year ago.

AKEP data shows that the total number of mobile subscribers or SIM cards at the end of 2024 reached around 3.4 million, in other words, every resident in Albania owns around 1.4 SIM cards, a figure higher than the European average of 1.25 SIM cards per resident.

Meanwhile, the number of active SIM cards (the number of cards used to make electronic communications during the last three months) reached about 2.5 million, down 3.8% year-on-year. The market volume of fixed-line services last year fell to 11.39 billion lek, down 4% compared to the previous year. The decline was mainly due to the contraction of One Albania's fixed-line revenues, by about 1 billion lek.

However, One Albania continues to lead the market structure by revenue, with about 27% of it, followed by Vodafone Albania with about 24%, ASC (Tring), with about 8%, Digicom and Abissnet, with about 6%, etc. AKEP data shows that the number of subscribers at the end of last year reached about 687 thousand, an increase of 8.6% compared to the previous year. The growth rate of the number of subscribers was approximately the same as in 2023.

The fixed-line broadband internet service market has been highly competitive in the last decade, especially in large urban centers, where population concentration is higher and where operators' investments in network infrastructure are also concentrated. / Monitor
