Remaining a DP bastion, Kukësi punishes Rama with a vote for investment

Unlike the rest of the country, the Kukës region turned blue again in these elections, rejecting the ruling Socialist Party. The coalition led by the Democratic Party emerged victorious in the vast majority of polling stations, including the city of Kukës and ten administrative units - including the birthplaces of the SP candidate, Ali Hallaçi, and the mayor of Kukës, Albert Halili.

The Zonal Electoral Commission declared the vote counting process for parties closed on Monday evening, while the vote counting for open list candidates is starting. Based on the summary table distributed by officials of the Kukës CEAZ no. 11, the number of voters who voted in ZAZ no. 11 is 20,932 people, of which 10,045 are women. Out of 19,950 valid votes, 9,331 votes belong to the PD-ASHM coalition, while 6,229 votes are for the Socialist Party and 3,880 votes belong to the Social Democratic Party.

The DP-ASHM coalition has secured a lead of 3,102 votes over the ruling Socialist Party, taking two of the three district mandates.

The punitive vote against the ruling Socialist Party, according to Petrit Lleshi, a business representative in Kukës, comes as a result of the discrimination that has been made against the area by the government, but also an electoral campaign by the Socialists that has not centered on the electorate.

"Unpaved roads, inadequate medical services, an administration that does not serve the citizen, but also the lack of entrances and exits to the city of Kukës due to the construction of the new bridge, are some of the factors that lead to the massive rejection of the SP in Kukës," says Lleshi.

Meanwhile, Flamur Hoxha, the political leader of the Democratic Party in this region, says that giving trust to the opposition is a challenge for future deputies of this political force.

"This rejection vote is both a dissatisfaction towards the local administration, but also a punishment towards the government for the discrimination it has made against Kukës in investments, as this region makes a substantial contribution to national income," Hoxha told BIRN.

"We, as the opposition, will use our capabilities to serve the electorate that has trusted us by representing them in parliament," added Hoxha.

The Socialist Party in Kukës has not managed to win any elections since March 31, 1991, with the exception of two cases where MPs Namik Dokle and Shyqyri Duraku won in 1997 and 2001 with a majority, but without managing to obtain a majority of the number of MPs representing this area./ BIRN
