China's warning: Alliances like NATO could fuel conflict in the

Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu warned on Sunday against the creation of NATO-like military alliances in the Asia-Pacific region, saying such a thing could face the region with a "maelstrom" of conflict.

His comments came a day after US and Chinese military ships sailed close to each other near the Taiwan Strait. This incident has provoked anger on both sides.

"Attempts to create NATO-like alliances in the Asia-Pacific are a way to kidnap regional states, and to incite conflicts and confrontations," Li said at a security conference in Singapore .

The American Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, is also participating in this conference.

Li's comments have highlighted China's criticism of the United States' efforts to create alliances in the region to counter Beijing's rise.

The United States is part of the AUKUS pact, which also includes Australia and Britain. Washington is also a member of the QUAD group, which includes Australia, India and Japan.

"Today, the Asia-Pacific needs open and comprehensive cooperation, not the creation of small groups," said Li.

He has tried to present the US as the instigator of the lack of stability in the region, and China as a country seeking to reduce tensions.

"It cannot be denied that in case of any conflict or dispute between China and the United States, the pain for the world would be unbearable", he said, among other things./REL
