Scientists say they have found the reason why AstraZeneca causes blood clots

Scientists believe they have found the cause that leads to blood clots after the AstraZeneca vaccine. They add that cases of this involvement have been rare.

The team of experts in Cardiff and the US has shown in detail how a protein in the blood is withdrawn from a key component of the vaccine.

They think this triggers a chain reaction, involving the immune system and that can culminate in dangerous clots. The vaccine is thought to have saved about one million lives from Covid-19.

The Cardiff team was given government emergency funding to find the answers. AstraZeneca scientists themselves also joined the research project.

People with clots had unusual antibodies that were attacking a protein in their blood called platelet factor four.

All vaccines used in the UK try to give a snippet of the Covid virus genetic code to the body to train the immune system.
