Storm and flood, Austria declares civil emergency

Authorities in Austria have declared a civil emergency after landslides disrupted rescue services in several villages, while at least one person lost his life after heavy rains caused floods in Carinthia.

Treffen Mayor Gerald Ebner said 20 houses and farms could not be reached by rescue teams.

A storm in the late hours of yesterday brought the risk of further landslides.

Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen thanked rescue teams and described the devastation in Carinthia as "dramatic".

The rise of extreme events in Europe is, according to scientists, a direct consequence of global warming.
