Trump congratulates Vučić on statehood anniversary, expects increased

US President Donald Trump has congratulated Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Serbia's Statehood Day - which falls on February 15 - and said he expects the two countries to strengthen their partnership and security for the people of both countries. Vučić published the letter sent by Trump in a post on his social media accounts.

"We greatly appreciate Serbia's important contribution to international security, whether in supporting the people of Ukraine in defense against Russian aggression, or in Serbia's contribution to numerous peacekeeping missions around the world," Trump's letter to Vučić said, among other things.

Serbia, so far, despite all the calls from Western countries, has not imposed sanctions on Russia for the war launched in Ukraine, even though by voting for resolutions at the United Nations (UN) it has confirmed that it condemns the invasion.

Trump added that the United States fully supports Serbia's continued integration on the Euro-Atlantic path, as well as its efforts to promote peaceful and prosperous relations with neighbors and partners in the region.

"I look forward to further strengthening our partnership, building on the increasingly strong ties between our countries, to jointly contribute to the increased security and prosperity of the citizens of Serbia and the United States," Trump's congratulatory message said, among other things.

The American president also stressed that he is pleased with the "increasingly intensive cooperation and new opportunities" for mutual investments in important sectors such as technology and energy.

Recently, the United States has placed the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS) on the sanctions list, because it is partly owned by the Russian company, Gazprom Neft, in order to prevent Russia from using revenues from the energy sector for the war in Ukraine.

Vucic was one of the world leaders who had a phone conversation with Trump, a few days after his victory in the November 5 presidential election.

At the time, the Serbian president said he felt "grateful" to Trump, who "immediately knew a lot about Serbia."

Serbia has also signed a contract with the firm of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in May 2024 for the "revitalization" of the General Staff complex in central Belgrade, which was partially destroyed during NATO bombing in 1999./ REL
