The EU Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, was present at the Inaugural meeting of the Joint Consultative Committee with the EU Economic and Social Committee.

Gonzato criticized the involvement of civil society in the integration process. The EU Ambassador called for the involvement and political engagement of civil society, and urged that integration not be limited to the Parliament alone.

"A process that involves the whole of society. It cannot be left to society and the Assembly alone, but civil society organizations must play an important role in this process. These countries will have to include civil society in all the work that will be done before they become part of our family."
